Montagu, 1945\u2019de kaleme ald\u0131\u011f\u0131 \u201cAntropolojide Etnik Grup Teriminin Kullan\u0131m\u0131\u201d adl\u0131 makalesinde \u0131rk kavram\u0131n\u0131n karma\u015f\u0131k insan \u00e7e\u015fitlili\u011fini a\u00e7\u0131klamakta yetersiz kald\u0131\u011f\u0131n\u0131 iddia ederek, \u0131rk yerine etnik grup teriminin kullan\u0131lmas\u0131n\u0131 \u00f6nerdi. Montagu etnik grubu; co\u011frafi ve sosyal engeller gibi ayr\u0131\u015ft\u0131r\u0131c\u0131 mekanizmalar nedeniyle fiziki ve k\u00fclt\u00fcrel farkl\u0131l\u0131klar ta\u015f\u0131yan topluluk olarak tan\u0131mlad\u0131. Antropologlar g\u00f6\u00e7, mutasyon, se\u00e7ilim, izolasyon ve genetik s\u00fcr\u00fcklenme gibi kavramlar\u0131 kullanarak dinamik bir \u201cgenetik \u0131rk\u201d kuram\u0131 geli\u015ftirmek zorundayd\u0131. <em>American Anthropologist<\/em> dergisinde 1942\u2019de yay\u0131mlanan makalesinde Montagu, \u0131rklar\u0131 belirli bir co\u011frafi b\u00f6lge kapsam\u0131nda bir pop\u00fclasyonda meydana gelen genetik de\u011fi\u015fim s\u00fcrecinin bir sonucu olarak tan\u0131mlad\u0131. Dobzhansky, \u0131rklar\u0131, baz\u0131 gen ya da genlerin frekanslar\u0131 y\u00f6n\u00fcnden farkl\u0131l\u0131k g\u00f6steren pop\u00fclasyonlar olarak tan\u0131ml\u0131yor, kar\u015f\u0131l\u0131kl\u0131 ge\u00e7i\u015f potansiyeli olan genlerin s\u0131n\u0131rlar\u0131n\u0131n \u0131rklar\u0131 ay\u0131rd\u0131\u011f\u0131n\u0131 vurgulamay\u0131 da ihmal etmiyordu. Bu tan\u0131ma g\u00f6re \u0131rklar aktif birimlerdi ve de\u011fi\u015fmeye m\u00fcsaitti. Ona g\u00f6re insanlar\u0131n mevcut \u00e7e\u015fitlili\u011fini s\u0131n\u0131fland\u0131rmak, hayvanlardaki \u00e7e\u015fitlili\u011fi alt t\u00fcrler kapsam\u0131nda s\u0131n\u0131fland\u0131rmak kadar do\u011fald\u0131 (Dobzhansky, 1963).<\/p>\n<p>Irklar ve evrim konusunda s\u00fcren tart\u0131\u015fmalar, 1950 y\u0131l\u0131nda Cold Spring Harbor laboratuvarlar\u0131nda ger\u00e7ekle\u015ftirilen \u201c\u0130nsan\u0131n Evrimi ve K\u00f6keni\u201d isimli, bir\u00e7ok \u00fcnl\u00fc antropolo\u011fun yan\u0131 s\u0131ra, Dobzhansky, Haldane, Mayr gibi \u00fcnl\u00fc evrimsel biyologlar\u0131n da kat\u0131l\u0131m\u0131yla ger\u00e7ekle\u015ftirilen toplant\u0131yla yeni bir boyut kazand\u0131. Bu sempozyumdaki ana tart\u0131\u015fma konusu, Darwin\u2019in evrim kuram\u0131n\u0131n Mendel geneti\u011fi ile birle\u015ftirilmesi sonucunda ortaya \u00e7\u0131kan sentetik teorinin insan evrimine uyarlanmas\u0131yd\u0131. Toplant\u0131 sonunda, insan evrimi kapsam\u0131nda tan\u0131mlanm\u0131\u015f \u00e7ok say\u0131da cins ve t\u00fcr\u00fcn \u201c<em>Homo<\/em>\u201d olarak isimlendirilen tek bir cins alt\u0131nda toplanmas\u0131na karar verildi. Di\u011fer taraftan paleoantropologlar\u0131n basit morfometrik \u00f6l\u00e7\u00fcmlere dayal\u0131 t\u00fcr tan\u0131mlama y\u00f6ntemleri (morfot\u00fcr) taksonomistler taraf\u0131ndan etrafl\u0131ca ele\u015ftirildi. Sempozyumun sonu\u00e7 bildirgesinde, modern evrimsel sentezin, biyolojik t\u00fcr kavram\u0131n\u0131n ve taksonomik isimlendirme kurallar\u0131n\u0131n fiziki antropolojide kullan\u0131lmas\u0131 y\u00f6n\u00fcnde ortak bir g\u00f6r\u00fc\u015f birli\u011fi olu\u015ftu. Washburn makalesinde fiziki antropologlar\u0131n bak\u0131\u015f a\u00e7\u0131lar\u0131n\u0131 ve yakla\u015f\u0131mlar\u0131n\u0131 de\u011fi\u015ftirmelerinin vaktinin geldi\u011fini vurgulayarak, yeni sentez \u00f6ncesi ve sonras\u0131nda fiziki antropolojinin \u00e7al\u0131\u015fma prensiplerini basit bi\u00e7imde aktard\u0131. Eski yakla\u015f\u0131m farkl\u0131l\u0131klar\u0131n basit tan\u0131m\u0131na ve \u00e7e\u015fitlili\u011fin hiyerar\u015fik bi\u00e7imde tasnifine dayal\u0131yd\u0131. Adaptif olmad\u0131\u011f\u0131na inan\u0131lan \u00e7ok say\u0131da v\u00fccut \u00f6zelli\u011fi \u0131rklar\u0131 s\u0131n\u0131fland\u0131rmak i\u00e7in kullan\u0131l\u0131yordu. Washburn\u2019a g\u00f6re yeni fiziki antropoloji evrimsel s\u00fcre\u00e7lerin mekanizmalar\u0131 \u00fczerinde odaklanmal\u0131 ve dinamik bir bak\u0131\u015f a\u00e7\u0131s\u0131 benimsemeliydi. S\u0131n\u0131fland\u0131rma arka planda kalmal\u0131, s\u00fcre\u00e7ler ve buna ba\u011fl\u0131 varyasyonlar\u0131n nedenleri ve sonu\u00e7lar\u0131 \u00f6n plana \u00e7\u0131kmal\u0131yd\u0131. Ayn\u0131 zamanda yeni fiziki antropolojik yakla\u015f\u0131m hipotezlerin olu\u015fturulmas\u0131nda bilimsel kan\u0131tlar\u0131n \u00f6nemi \u00fczerinde yo\u011funla\u015fmal\u0131yd\u0131 (aktaran, Fuentes, 2010).<\/p>\n<p>Yeni yakla\u015f\u0131m\u0131n\u0131n bilimadamlar\u0131 aras\u0131nda kabul g\u00f6rmesi i\u00e7in zamana ihtiya\u00e7 vard\u0131. Sadece antropologlar de\u011fil, \u00fcnl\u00fc taksonomistler (\u00f6rn. Ernst Mayr) ve genetik\u00e7ilerin (\u00f6rn. Theodosius Dobzhansky) b\u00fcy\u00fck k\u0131sm\u0131 insan\u0131n politipik bir t\u00fcr oldu\u011funa ve alt gruplar\u0131n\u0131n \u0131rklara ayr\u0131larak s\u0131n\u0131fland\u0131r\u0131lmas\u0131 gerekti\u011fine inan\u0131yordu. 1955 y\u0131l\u0131nda bu yakla\u015f\u0131m\u0131n devam\u0131 olarak Stanley Garn ve Charlton Coon yeni bir s\u0131n\u0131fland\u0131rma y\u00f6ntemi \u00f6nerdiler. \u0130ki antropolog \u0131rklar\u0131, co\u011frafi \u0131rklar, yerel \u0131rklar ve mikro \u0131rklar olarak \u00fc\u00e7 grupta toplad\u0131. Kitab\u0131nda, Orta Pleistosen d\u00f6neme ait fosil kay\u0131tlarda bu be\u015f \u0131rk\u0131n varl\u0131\u011f\u0131na ili\u015fkin kan\u0131tlar\u0131n bulundu\u011funu iddia ediyordu. Bu be\u015f \u0131rk\u0131n atas\u0131 <em>Homo erectus<\/em>\u2019tu ve bu t\u00fcr be\u015f farkl\u0131 evrimsel dala ayr\u0131larak farkl\u0131 d\u00f6nemlerde <em>Homo sapiens<\/em>\u2019lere evrimle\u015fmi\u015fti. Be\u015f \u0131rk\u0131n <em>Homo sapiens<\/em> olmas\u0131 Coon\u2019a g\u00f6re e\u015f zamanl\u0131 olmad\u0131; en \u00f6nce sapiens olan \u0131rk Kafkazoidler, yani Beyazlard\u0131. Kongoid ve Kapoidler ise en son sapiens\u2019e evrimle\u015fen gruptu (Coon, 1962). Dobzhansky de insan \u0131rklar\u0131n\u0131n <em>Homo erectus<\/em>\u2019lardan birbirinden ba\u011f\u0131ms\u0131z bi\u00e7imde 5 farkl\u0131 koldan evrimle\u015fti\u011fini d\u00fc\u015f\u00fcn\u00fcyordu (Dobzhansky, 1963).
