Hannover Prensli\u011fi ordu bandosunda bir obuac\u0131 olan babas\u0131, Herschell\u2019in m\u00fczikle ilgilenmesinin temel itici g\u00fcc\u00fc olur. Bu sayede Herschell, \u00e7ocuklu\u011fundan itibaren d\u00f6nemin klasik m\u00fczi\u011fi ile ha\u015f\u0131r ne\u015fir olmaya ba\u015flam\u0131\u015ft\u0131r. Babas\u0131, William\u2019\u0131, abisini ve k\u0131z karde\u015fini sava\u015ftan uzak tutmak i\u00e7in elinden geleni yapm\u0131\u015f olsa da elinde olmayan ko\u015fullar \u00e7evresini sarm\u0131\u015ft\u0131r. G\u00fc\u00e7lenen bir Fransa tehlikesine kar\u015f\u0131 B\u00fcy\u00fck Britanya ile birle\u015fen Hannover Prensli\u011fi, ne yaz\u0131k ki bu hamlesi ile Merkez Avrupa\u2019daki sald\u0131r\u0131lardan kendini korumay\u0131 ba\u015faramaz. Yabanc\u0131s\u0131 oldu\u011fu ve kendi ifadesiyle \u201cG\u00fcne\u015fin ve g\u00f6ky\u00fcz\u00fcn\u00fcn bir kere olsun y\u00fcz\u00fcn\u00fc g\u00f6stermedi\u011fi ya\u011fmurlu topraklar\u201dda William, ald\u0131\u011f\u0131 e\u011fitim ile viyola, klavsen ve org \u00e7almay\u0131 \u00f6\u011frenir. Bir m\u00fczik aletinde uzmanla\u015fmak yerine bestecilik \u00fczerine yo\u011funla\u015fmak ister. Ancak bu, ufak ve \u00f6nemsiz bir \u00fclkeden gelen bir m\u00fclteci i\u00e7in kolay de\u011fildir. Burada orglar\u0131n \u00e7al\u0131\u015fma prensibini incelerken ilk defa matematik ve optik ile tan\u0131\u015f\u0131r. Matemati\u011fin vaat etti\u011fi gizemli d\u00fcnyadan olduk\u00e7a etkilenen Herschell, m\u00fczik kariyerine bir s\u00fcre ara verip bilim kitaplar\u0131 okumaya ba\u015flar. Bu \u00f6z-e\u011fitimi s\u0131ras\u0131nda matematikten \u00e7ok daha fazla ilgisini \u00e7eken bir alan ke\u015ffeder: Astronomi!<\/p>\n<p>En k\u0131sa s\u00fcrede kendine g\u00fc\u00e7l\u00fc bir teleskop edinen Herschell, Sat\u00fcrn\u2019\u00fcn halkalar\u0131 ve Avc\u0131 G\u00f6k Adas\u0131 (Orion Nebula, M42) \u00fczerine yo\u011funla\u015f\u0131r. 1773-74 y\u0131llar\u0131 aras\u0131nda ald\u0131\u011f\u0131 notlar g\u00fcn\u00fcm\u00fcze kadar ula\u015fm\u0131\u015ft\u0131r. Astronomi \u201cbelas\u0131\u201d Herschell\u2019e bula\u015fm\u0131\u015ft\u0131r art\u0131k bir kere. G\u00fcnd\u00fczleri beste yapmaya devam eden Herschell, geceleri o \u00e7ok sevdi\u011fi g\u00f6ky\u00fcz\u00fcn\u00fc sabahlara kadar g\u00f6zler. Birbirine \u00e7ok yak\u0131n g\u00f6rd\u00fc\u011f\u00fc y\u0131ld\u0131zlar\u0131 izlemeye alan Herschell, bu tip y\u0131ld\u0131zlar\u0131n asl\u0131nda birbirleri etraf\u0131nda d\u00f6nd\u00fc\u011f\u00fcn\u00fc ortaya atar. Onun bu iddias\u0131n\u0131n ard\u0131ndan onlarca astronom \u201c\u00c7ift Y\u0131ld\u0131z\u201d denilen bu yap\u0131lara ilgi duymaya ba\u015flar.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Georgium Sidus: George\u2019un Y\u0131ld\u0131z\u0131<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bir ak\u015fam yine teleskopu ile y\u0131ld\u0131zlar\u0131n aras\u0131nda kendini kaybeden Hershell, yanl\u0131\u015fl\u0131kla tripodu kayd\u0131r\u0131r ve g\u00f6r\u00fc\u015f alan\u0131na soluk, mavi bir cisim girer. 1781 y\u0131l\u0131nda bir makalesinde, yapt\u0131\u011f\u0131 g\u00f6zlemler sonucunda cismin bir kuyrukluy\u0131ld\u0131z oldu\u011funu d\u00fc\u015f\u00fcnd\u00fc\u011f\u00fcn\u00fc, ancak emin olmak i\u00e7in daha fazla g\u00f6zlem gerekti\u011fini yazar. Cismin ismini ise Britanya Kral\u0131 ve Hannover Prensi olan \u201cGeorge III\u201d\u00fcn an\u0131s\u0131na \u201cGeorge\u2019un Y\u0131ld\u0131z\u0131\u201d koyar. Bu geli\u015fmenin ard\u0131ndan konu ile ilgilenen Rus astrofizik\u00e7i Andres Lexel, elde edilen t\u00fcm g\u00f6zlemsel verileri inceledi\u011finde cismin bir gezegen oldu\u011funu matematiksel olarak ortaya koyar. Yap\u0131lan t\u00fcm hesaplamalar, cismin bir kuyrukluy\u0131ld\u0131z kadar tutars\u0131z ve eliptik y\u00f6r\u00fcngesi olmad\u0131\u011f\u0131n\u0131 g\u00f6stermektedir. 1780\u2019lerde Royal Astronomical Society taraf\u0131ndan cisme oybirli\u011fi ile Antik Yunan G\u00f6ky\u00fcz\u00fc Titan Tanr\u0131s\u0131 \u201cOranos\u201dun ismi verilir. O zamana kadar ise gezegene halk taraf\u0131ndan \u201cHerschell\u201d denmektedir. Herschell\u2019i m\u00fczik y\u00f6n\u00fc haricinde halk nezdinde pop\u00fcler hale getiren bu ke\u015ffi olmu\u015ftur. Bu pop\u00fclerli\u011fini kazanca \u00e7evirmek isteyen Herschell, kendi teleskop \u015firketini kurar ve Britanya\u2019da kendi ad\u0131n\u0131 ta\u015f\u0131yan markayla teleskop satmaya ba\u015flar. T\u00fcm bu s\u0131ralarda 20\u2019ye yak\u0131n senfonisi bulunmaktad\u0131r. Uran\u00fcs\u2019e y\u0131llar boyunca bakmaya devam eden Herschell, matematiksel hesaplamalar\u0131 takip ederek, Uran\u00fcs\u2019\u00fcn uydular\u0131 Oberon, Titania, Enceladus ve Mimas\u2019\u0131 da ke\u015ffeder. Ancak bu uydulara isimlerini, babas\u0131n\u0131n izinden ilerleyip bilim ile ha\u015f\u0131r ne\u015fir olan o\u011flu, babas\u0131n\u0131n \u00f6l\u00fcm\u00fcnden sonra vermi\u015ftir.<\/p>\n<p>Herschell, 1782\u2019de, optik alan\u0131ndaki geli\u015fmeler sayesinde g\u00fc\u00e7lendirilmi\u015f teleskoplarla derin uzay cisimlerini g\u00f6zlemeye ba\u015flar. Sahip oldu\u011fu 12 in\u00e7 (yakla\u015f\u0131k 30 cm) teleskopu ile 1782-1802 y\u0131llar\u0131 aras\u0131nda, bulutsu, g\u00f6kada gibi 2400 derin uzay cismini ke\u015ffetmi\u015ftir. Bu veriler 1800\u2019lerin sonunda \u00f6nce MIT\u2019li kad\u0131n akademisyenler, ard\u0131ndan da 1924 y\u0131l\u0131nda Edwin Hubble taraf\u0131ndan kullan\u0131lacak, bu sayede evrenin geni\u015fledi\u011fi ortaya \u00e7\u0131kacakt\u0131r.<\/p>\n<p><strong>D\u00fcnya d\u0131\u015f\u0131 ya\u015fam\u0131n pe\u015finde\u2026 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>T\u00fcm bu \u00e7al\u0131\u015fmalar\u0131n yan\u0131 s\u0131ra Herschell, d\u00fcnya d\u0131\u015f\u0131 ya\u015fam kavram konusuna da ilgi duymaktad\u0131r. D\u00f6nemin bilim felsefesi tart\u0131\u015fmalar\u0131na kat\u0131larak Ay\u2019da ya da Mars\u2019ta ya\u015fam olabilece\u011fini, ula\u015f\u0131ld\u0131\u011f\u0131 takdirde oradaki kimyasal yap\u0131lar\u0131 i\u00e7eren hayvan ve bitkileri g\u00f6rebilece\u011fimizi iddia etmi\u015ftir. Bu t\u00fcr d\u00fc\u015f\u00fcncelerine kan\u0131tlar ararken, Mars\u2019\u0131n kutuplar\u0131 oldu\u011funu, kuzeyindeki buz k\u00fctlelerini g\u00f6zlemleyerek ke\u015ffeder. Ayr\u0131ca Mars\u2019\u0131n eksen e\u011fikli\u011fini de g\u00f6zlemsel verilere dayanarak hesaplamay\u0131 ba\u015far\u0131r. Bu eksen e\u011fikli\u011fi parametresi ile Mars y\u00fczeyindeki mevsimlerin tarihlerini tutarl\u0131 bir \u015fekilde hesaplam\u0131\u015ft\u0131r. Ayr\u0131ca farkl\u0131 ortamlarda ya\u015fam\u0131 inceleyen Herschell, su alt\u0131ndaki farkl\u0131 canl\u0131 t\u00fcrlerini, Ay\u2019da ve\/ya Mars\u2019ta ya\u015fam konusunda bir analoji olarak kullanmaktad\u0131r. Bu \u00e7al\u0131\u015fmalar\u0131 s\u0131ras\u0131nda Mercan resiflerinin bitkilerden de\u011fil, hayvanlardan olu\u015ftu\u011funu, mikroskop \u00f6l\u00e7\u00fcmleri ile g\u00f6sterir.<\/p>\n<p><strong>K\u0131z\u0131l\u00f6tesi \u0131\u015f\u0131nlar<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Herschell, G\u00fcne\u015f lekelerine de \u00e7ok merakl\u0131d\u0131r. D\u00f6neminde insan g\u00f6z\u00fcne zarar vermeyen filtreler bulunmad\u0131\u011f\u0131ndan, g\u00f6r\u00fc\u015f\u00fcn\u00fc kaybetmek pahas\u0131na teleskopunun \u00f6n\u00fcne olduk\u00e7a sert bir k\u0131rm\u0131z\u0131 filtre takarak g\u00f6zlemler yapar. Bunu yaparken etraf\u0131n anormal derecede \u0131s\u0131nd\u0131\u011f\u0131n\u0131 fark eder. Ba\u015fka renk filtreler bu etkiyi yapmamaktad\u0131r. Renklerin s\u0131cakl\u0131k ile bir ili\u015fkisi olabilece\u011fini d\u00fc\u015f\u00fcn\u00fcr. Deneyler yapmaya ba\u015flar. 11 \u015eubat 1800 y\u0131l\u0131nda, her renk filtreyi \u0131\u015f\u0131k kaynaklar\u0131n\u0131n \u00f6n\u00fcne koyar ve her renk b\u00f6lgesine birer termometre yerle\u015ftirir. Bir tane de k\u0131rm\u0131z\u0131 rengin hemen yan\u0131na, oda s\u0131cakl\u0131\u011f\u0131n\u0131 \u00f6l\u00e7mek ve deneyi kontrol etmek i\u00e7in bir termometre b\u0131rak\u0131r. Deneyin sonucu bekledi\u011fi gibi olmaz, renklerin hi\u00e7birinde di\u015fe dokunur s\u0131cakl\u0131k farkl\u0131l\u0131klar\u0131 g\u00f6r\u00fclmez. Ancak k\u0131rm\u0131z\u0131n\u0131n hemen yan\u0131ndaki, s\u00f6z\u00fcm ona kontrol ayg\u0131t\u0131 olacak olan termometrede olduk\u00e7a y\u00fcksek bir s\u0131cakl\u0131k art\u0131\u015f\u0131 vard\u0131r. Herschell, bu deney \u00fczerine o d\u00f6nemde pek \u00e7ok ki\u015finin &#8211; fizik\u00e7ilerin bile- hayal edemedi\u011fi, herkesi \u015fok eden bir iddiada bulunur: insan g\u00f6z\u00fcn\u00fcn g\u00f6remedi\u011fi ba\u015fka renkler ve \u0131\u015f\u0131k t\u00fcrleri vard\u0131r ve bunlar s\u0131cakl\u0131k farklar\u0131yla ay\u0131rt edilebilir. Bu olu\u015fum g\u00fcn\u00fcm\u00fczde h\u00e2l\u00e2 g\u00f6k cisimlerinin isimlendirilmesi, gezegen ke\u015fifleri gibi konularda karar mekanizmalar\u0131ndan biridir. Ayr\u0131ca Alfred Nobel\u2019in \u00f6l\u00fcm\u00fcnden sonra vasiyeti \u00fczerine \u0130sve\u00e7 Bilim Akademisi\u2019ne \u00fcye olur ve orada da bir astronomi alt dal\u0131n\u0131n olu\u015fmas\u0131n\u0131 sa\u011flar. Onu farkl\u0131 k\u0131lan, sahip oldu\u011fu merak duygusunu, m\u00fcziksel estetik ile birle\u015ftirebilme yetene\u011fiydi. M\u00fczik tarihinde Herschell kadar \u00e7ok y\u00f6nl\u00fc bir besteci var olmad\u0131. \u00d6nemli olan nokta ise, bilimsel a\u00e7\u0131dan \u00e7ok \u00f6nemli ke\u015fifler yaparken h\u00e2l\u00e2 kompozisyonlar \u00fcretip, orkestra y\u00f6netebilecek kadar kendinden emin olabilmesiydi.
