Biliminsanlar\u0131 taraf\u0131ndan bu proteinler kabuk-ba\u011flay\u0131c\u0131 protein olarak adland\u0131r\u0131l\u0131r. \u00c7\u00fcnk\u00fc kabuk bile\u015finlerinin birbirine ba\u011flanmas\u0131na yard\u0131mc\u0131 olurlar. Ayr\u0131ca <em>Ecphora<\/em>\u2019ya kendine has rengini veren pigmentlere de sahiptirler. Bu pigmentler proteinlerle birle\u015ferek protein-pigment kompleksi olu\u015fturur.<br \/>\nAra\u015ft\u0131rmac\u0131lara g\u00f6re <em>Ecphora<\/em> kabuklar\u0131n\u0131n renklerinin bu denli iyi korunmas\u0131n\u0131n bir unsuru bu protein-pigment kompleksi olabilir. Bu kabuklar\u0131 bulup seyreltilmi\u015f asit ile muamele ettiklerinde \u00e7\u00f6z\u00fcnm\u00fc\u015f kabuk proteinlerinden olu\u015fan dokunulmam\u0131\u015f ince tabakan\u0131n bir santimetrenin \u00fczerinde olmas\u0131 biliminsanlar\u0131n\u0131 \u015fa\u015f\u0131rtt\u0131. Spektroskopi ve elektron mikroskobu ile yap\u0131lan ara\u015ft\u0131rmalarda bu protein tabakas\u0131n\u0131n tam 15 milyon y\u0131l boyunca korunmu\u015f oldu\u011fu ortaya \u00e7\u0131kart\u0131ld\u0131. Hazen, bu proteinlerin fosil yataklar\u0131nda g\u00f6zlemlenen en iyi \u015fekilde korunmu\u015f ve en ya\u015fl\u0131 \u00f6rnekler oldu\u011funu belirtti.<br \/>\nDikkat \u00e7eken bir nokta da, bu proteinlerin g\u00fcn\u00fcm\u00fcz yumu\u015fak\u00e7alar\u0131n\u0131n kabuk proteinleri ile karakteristik \u00f6zellikleri payla\u015f\u0131yor olmas\u0131yd\u0131. Asitle muamele edildiklerinde ikisi de ince, elastik bir protein tabakas\u0131 \u00e7\u00f6zeltisi olu\u015fturuyorlar, ki bu \u00e7\u00f6zelti orjinal kabuktaki ile ayn\u0131 rengi te\u015fkil ediyordu.
