Niels Bohr, Szilard ve di\u011fer birka\u00e7 biliminsan\u0131n\u0131n \u00f6nerisi \u00fczerine Amerika\u2019daki ve Bat\u0131 Avrupa \u00fclkelerindeki biliminsanlar\u0131, Alman biliminsanlar\u0131n\u0131n atom bombas\u0131 konusunda ilerlemesini engellemek amac\u0131yla atomun par\u00e7alanmas\u0131 deneyleriyle ilgili \u00e7al\u0131\u015fmalar\u0131n\u0131 bilimsel makale olarak yay\u0131mlamama karar\u0131 ald\u0131lar. Bu karara tepkiler hem olumlu hem de olumsuz y\u00f6nde oldu ve bir y\u0131l sonra makaleler yay\u0131mlanmaya ba\u015flad\u0131.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Einstein uyar\u0131 mektubunu imzal\u0131yor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1939 y\u0131l\u0131 yaz aylar\u0131nda Szilard ve birka\u00e7 \u00e7al\u0131\u015fma arkada\u015f\u0131 Einstein\u2019dan yard\u0131m istemeye karar verdiler. Einstein\u2019\u0131n b\u00fcy\u00fck sayg\u0131nl\u0131\u011f\u0131ndan yararlanarak h\u00fck\u00fcmetin \u00fcst kademe \u00fcyelerine ula\u015fabileceklerine inan\u0131yorlard\u0131. \u00d6nceki y\u0131llarda bu konuda pasifist olan ancak Nazi barbarl\u0131\u011f\u0131n\u0131 birinci elden ya\u015fayan Einstein, Szilard ve arkada\u015flar\u0131n\u0131n \u00f6nerisini dinledikten sonra, Ba\u015fkan Roosevelt\u2019i olas\u0131 \u00e7ekince kar\u015f\u0131s\u0131nda uyaran mektubu imzalamaya karar verdi. Biliminsanlar\u0131n\u0131n iletisi, Ba\u015fkan\u0131n resmi olmayan dan\u0131\u015fman\u0131 Alexander Sachs\u2019\u0131n da yard\u0131m\u0131yla Ba\u015fkan Roosevelt\u2019e ula\u015ft\u0131. Bu s\u00fcre\u00e7 hakk\u0131nda kayna\u011f\u0131 belli olmayan, ku\u015fkulu bir ifadeye g\u00f6re Roosevelt, mektubu ve Szilard\u2019dan gelen bilgi notunu okuduktan sonra derhal iki milyar dolar\u0131n biliminsanlar\u0131na ayr\u0131lmas\u0131 emrini verdi. Roosevelt\u2019in ger\u00e7ek yan\u0131t\u0131 daha al\u00e7ak g\u00f6n\u00fcll\u00fcyd\u00fc. Konuyu incelemek \u00fczere ikisi silahl\u0131 kuvvetlerden olmak \u00fczere \u00fc\u00e7 ki\u015filik bir komite kuruldu. Yedi veya sekiz ay sonra ara\u015ft\u0131rma i\u00e7in alt\u0131 bin dolar ayr\u0131ld\u0131. Bu konuda ilerleme en d\u00fc\u015f\u00fck d\u00fczeydeydi.<\/p>\n<p>Ara\u015ft\u0131rman\u0131n yava\u015f ilerlemesi nedeniyle Amerikan bilim d\u00fcnyas\u0131n\u0131n \u00f6nde gelen isimleri alarma ge\u00e7ti ve askeri olanaklarla atom enerjisi \u00fcretimine ilgi artmaya ba\u015flad\u0131. 1940 y\u0131l\u0131 yaz aylar\u0131nda yeni ve geni\u015fletilmi\u015f bir komite kuruldu -komite bu kez tamamen sivil biliminsanlar\u0131ndan olu\u015fmu\u015ftu- ve ara\u015ft\u0131rma h\u0131zla ilerlemeye ba\u015flad\u0131. Ancak h\u00fck\u00fcmetin projeye parasal deste\u011fi k\u0131s\u0131tl\u0131yd\u0131; sonraki on sekiz ay i\u00e7in on alt\u0131 k\u00fc\u00e7\u00fck ara\u015ft\u0131rma projesine yakla\u015f\u0131k \u00fc\u00e7 y\u00fcz bin dolar ayr\u0131ld\u0131.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hangi \u00fclkeler yapabilir?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>K\u0131sa bir s\u00fcre sonra biliminsanlar\u0131 atom bombas\u0131n\u0131n \u00fcretilebilece\u011fi uranyum madeninin U-235 olarak bilinen metalin son derece ender bi\u00e7imi oldu\u011funu \u00f6\u011frendiler. U-235\u2019in do\u011fal uranyum madeninden ayr\u0131\u015ft\u0131r\u0131lmas\u0131n\u0131n \u00e7ok zor bir i\u015f oldu\u011fu anla\u015f\u0131ld\u0131. A\u00e7\u0131kt\u0131r ki, atomun g\u00fcc\u00fcn\u00fc elde etmede yaln\u0131zca end\u00fcstrisi geli\u015fmi\u015f bir \u00fclke yar\u0131\u015fa girebilirdi.<\/p>\n<p>Hahn-Strassmann\u2019\u0131n bulgusundan sonraki bir y\u0131l i\u00e7inde atomun par\u00e7alanmas\u0131yla ilgili deneyler konusunda t\u00fcm d\u00fcnyada y\u00fczden fazla bilimsel makale yay\u0131nland\u0131. Bu ara\u015ft\u0131rman\u0131n i\u015faret etti\u011fi ger\u00e7ekler biliminsanlar\u0131 taraf\u0131ndan biliniyordu: Astronomik rakamlarla parasal harcamalar yapmaya haz\u0131r bir \u00fclke <strong>b\u00fcy\u00fck bir olas\u0131l\u0131kla<\/strong> atom enerjisini kullanabilecekti.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cB\u00fcy\u00fck bir olas\u0131l\u0131kla\u201d s\u00f6zc\u00fc\u011f\u00fc bu ba\u011flamda \u00f6nemliydi. \u00c7\u00fcnk\u00fc \u00fcnl\u00fc biliminsanlar\u0131ndan hi\u00e7biri, h\u00fck\u00fcmetine, milyonlarca dolar harcand\u0131ktan sonra ara\u015ft\u0131rma s\u0131ras\u0131nda a\u015f\u0131lmas\u0131 imk\u00e2ns\u0131z bir engelle kar\u015f\u0131la\u015f\u0131lmayaca\u011f\u0131n\u0131n garantisini veremezdi. Ger\u00e7ek \u015fuydu ki, herhangi bir atom enerjisi projesi en iyi de\u011ferlendirmeyle bir kumar, belirsizliklerle donanm\u0131\u015f bir \u00e7aba olacakt\u0131. Japonya, Almanya, Fransa, Sovyetler Birli\u011fi ve \u0130ngiltere gibi \u00fclkelerin de bilimsel ve sanayi kaynaklar\u0131 atom gizilg\u00fcc\u00fcne (potansiyeline) ula\u015fmay\u0131 sa\u011flayabilirdi.<\/p>\n<p>\u00d6rne\u011fin, Japon fizik\u00e7ilerin bu konudaki kuramsal \u00e7al\u0131\u015fmalar\u0131 ABD\u2019deki fizik\u00e7ilerinkine denkti. Japonlar\u0131n laboratuvar olanaklar\u0131 ve ayg\u0131tlar\u0131 birinci s\u0131n\u0131f niteli\u011fe sahipti. Hideki Yukawa\u2019n\u0131n ve di\u011fer Japon fizik\u00e7ilerin \u00f6nemli ara\u015ft\u0131rmalar\u0131ndan d\u00fcnyadaki t\u00fcm biliminsanlar\u0131 \u00f6vg\u00fcyle s\u00f6z ediyordu. Ancak sava\u015f ve sava\u015fa haz\u0131rl\u0131k nedeniyle Japon ekonomisi zor durumdayd\u0131.
