En y\u00fcksek idareciden \u00f6\u011frencilere, b\u00f6l\u00fcmdeki g\u00f6revlilere kadar herkesten ayn\u0131 sayg\u0131y\u0131 g\u00f6ren ve \u201cBey\u201d hitab\u0131n\u0131 her y\u00f6n\u00fcyle hak eden olgun bir insand\u0131. \u00dcniversite d\u0131\u015f\u0131nda olup Erdal Bey\u2019in bilimsel y\u00f6n\u00fcn\u00fc bilmeyenleri, onun d\u00fcnyaca tan\u0131nan \u00e7ok \u00f6nemli bir bilim adam\u0131 oldu\u011funa inand\u0131rmak bazan zor oluyor. \u201cHadi can\u0131m, abart\u0131yorsunuz\u201d havas\u0131na, bir kez Cumhurba\u015fkan\u0131 Turgut \u00d6zal ve e\u015fi Semra \u00d6zal\u2019\u0131n da kap\u0131l\u0131p sonra s\u00f6yledikleri i\u00e7in \u00f6z\u00fcr dilediklerini gazetelerden okudu\u011fumuzu hat\u0131rl\u0131yorum.<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>Erdal \u0130n\u00f6n\u00fc\u2019y\u00fc y\u0131llar \u00f6nce ilk kez, 1967 bahar\u0131nda Ankara Fen Lisesi\u2019ne gelip bizlere bir tan\u0131t\u0131m konu\u015fmas\u0131 yapt\u0131\u011f\u0131 s\u0131rada tan\u0131d\u0131m. B\u00fcy\u00fck \u00fcmitle ve T\u00fcrkiye\u2019ye bilim insan\u0131 yeti\u015ftirmek iddias\u0131yla kurulmu\u015f Fen Lisesi\u2019nin art\u0131k mezuniyet y\u0131l\u0131na gelmi\u015f ilk \u00f6\u011frencileriydik ve \u00fcniversite s\u0131nav\u0131na ba\u015fvurmadan \u00f6nce b\u00f6l\u00fcm tercihlerini yapmam\u0131z gerekiyordu. Bu tercihi temel bilimler y\u00f6n\u00fcnde yapmam\u0131z i\u00e7in \u00f6\u011fretmenlerimiz yo\u011fun bir gayretle her hafta bir ba\u015fka konu\u015fmac\u0131y\u0131 liseye davet etmekteydiler. Erdal \u0130n\u00f6n\u00fc\u2019den sonraki ziyaret\u00e7ilerden birisi, DNA\u2019y\u0131 ke\u015ffeden James Watson idi. Bizler fizik laboratuvar\u0131nda deney yaparken bir grup halinde geldiler. Watson a\u00e7\u0131klamalar\u0131 sessizce dinleyip bizlere \u015f\u00f6yle bir bakt\u0131ktan sonra \u00e7\u0131kt\u0131. Nobel \u00d6d\u00fcll\u00fc bilim adamlar\u0131n\u0131n da bizler gibi bir insan oldu\u011funu g\u00f6rmek, temel bilim tercihimde beni cesaretlendirmi\u015f olmal\u0131. Ama esas Erdal \u0130n\u00f6n\u00fc \u00f6rne\u011fine bakarak, ODT\u00dc Fizik B\u00f6l\u00fcm\u00fc\u2019ne y\u00fcksek bir puanla girdim. 1967 Ekim\u2019inde ba\u015flayan \u00f6\u011frencilik ya\u015fam\u0131m, hareketli ve heyecanl\u0131 oldu\u011fu kadar verimli bir \u015fekilde 1976\u2019da doktoram\u0131 alana dek ODT\u00dc\u2019de ge\u00e7ti.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Erdal \u0130n\u00f6n\u00fc\u2019n\u00fcn \u00f6\u011frencisiydim<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Erdal \u0130n\u00f6n\u00fc\u2019den ald\u0131\u011f\u0131m ilk derste, onu \u015fahsen tan\u0131mam bende unutulmayacak bir iz b\u0131rakt\u0131. \u0130kinci s\u0131n\u0131fta Suha G\u00fcrsey\u2019den ald\u0131\u011f\u0131m\u0131z Bilim Tarihi dersinin 1969 bahar d\u00f6nemindeki devam\u0131n\u0131n, o s\u0131rada bir d\u00f6nem i\u00e7in ziyarete gitti\u011fi Princeton \u00dcniversitesi\u2019nden d\u00f6n\u00fc\u015f\u00fcnde Erdal \u0130n\u00f6n\u00fc taraf\u0131ndan verilece\u011fini duyduk. Bu ders, son derece s\u0131ra d\u0131\u015f\u0131 oldu. Erdal Bey, \u00f6nce bibliyografya taramalar\u0131nda g\u00f6revler vererek, bizim \u00e7a\u011fda\u015f T\u00fcrk fizik\u00e7ileri, matematik\u00e7ileri ve kimyac\u0131lar\u0131n\u0131n makaleleriyle tan\u0131\u015fmam\u0131z\u0131 sa\u011flad\u0131. K\u00fct\u00fcphanelerde bilimsel dergileri ve abstractlar\u0131 kullanarak at\u0131f \u00e7\u0131karmay\u0131 \u00f6\u011frendik. \u00d6zel olarak davet etti\u011fi \u0130stanbul \u00dcniversitesi\u2019nin eski hocalar\u0131 Cahit Arf\u2019tan 1933 \u00dcniversite Reformu\u2019ndan sonra T\u00fcrkiye\u2019de matemati\u011fin geli\u015fmesini, Hamit Nafiz Pamir\u2019den jeolojinin tarihini dinledik. Sonu\u00e7ta standard bir bilim tarihi kitab\u0131n\u0131 takip etmedik ama, makale yazman\u0131n ve g\u00fcncel ara\u015ft\u0131rmalar\u0131 izlemenin \u00f6nemini T\u00fcrkiye\u2019nin bir sonraki nesil bilim insanlar\u0131 Erdal \u0130n\u00f6n\u00fc\u2019den \u00f6\u011frenmi\u015f oldular. Bu dersin sonras\u0131nda Erdal \u0130n\u00f6n\u00fc, T\u00fcrkiye adresiyle \u00e7\u0131km\u0131\u015f veya d\u0131\u015far\u0131daki T\u00fcrk bilimcileri taraf\u0131ndan 1933-1968 aras\u0131nda yay\u0131mlanm\u0131\u015f makaleleri ve o g\u00fcne dek yap\u0131lm\u0131\u015f t\u00fcm doktora tezlerinin ba\u015fl\u0131klar\u0131n\u0131 i\u00e7eren Fizik, Matematik ve Kimya Bibliyografyalar\u0131\u2019n\u0131 \u00e7\u0131kard\u0131. <em>Kimya Bibliyografyas\u0131<\/em>\u2019n\u0131n d\u00fczeltilip geni\u015fletilmi\u015f yeni bir bas\u0131m\u0131n\u0131 ge\u00e7ti\u011fimiz aylarda tekrar yay\u0131mlam\u0131\u015ft\u0131. Fizik ve Matematik Bibliyografyalar\u0131\u2019n\u0131 g\u00f6zden ge\u00e7irmeye, ne yaz\u0131k ki zaman\u0131 yetmedi.<\/p>\n<p>1969 ve sonras\u0131nda ODT\u00dc\u2019de ya\u015fananlar, art\u0131k kitaplardan tarih olarak okunuyor. Erdal \u0130n\u00f6n\u00fc o y\u0131l\u0131n sonlar\u0131nda \u00f6nce vekaleten sonra asalaten ODT\u00dc Rekt\u00f6rl\u00fc\u011f\u00fc g\u00f6revini \u00fcstlenmek zorunda kalm\u0131\u015ft\u0131. Ama bu zor g\u00fcnlerde yo\u011fun i\u015fleri aras\u0131nda bizlere 4. s\u0131n\u0131f Kuantum Mekani\u011fi derslerini de verdi. 1970-1971 ders y\u0131l\u0131n\u0131n kar\u0131\u015f\u0131k g\u00fcnlerinde, de\u011fil derse gelmemek, ge\u00e7 kald\u0131\u011f\u0131n\u0131 bile hat\u0131rlam\u0131yorum. Her bak\u0131mdan \u00f6rnek al\u0131nacak bir \u00f6\u011fretim \u00fcyesiydi. Rekt\u00f6rl\u00fckten ayr\u0131ld\u0131ktan sonra y\u00fckseklisans ve doktora \u00f6\u011frencileri olan bizlere verdi\u011fi Fizikte Matematik Y\u00f6ntemler ve \u0130statistiksel Mekanik dersleri, zevkle ve tatmin duyarak verdi\u011fi kanaatinde oldu\u011fum y\u00fcksek d\u00fczeyli derslerdi.<\/p>\n<p>Erdal Bey, ayn\u0131 zamanda benim doktora ders dan\u0131\u015fman\u0131md\u0131. Matematik B\u00f6l\u00fcm\u00fc\u2019n\u00fcn en zor baz\u0131 derslerini almam\u0131 \u00f6nerdi\u011finde, hi\u00e7 itiraz etmeden gidip almam\u0131n ne kadar isabetli oldu\u011funu sonradan anlad\u0131m. 1972-1973 ders y\u0131l\u0131nda bir sene i\u00e7in ODT\u00dc\u2019ye tekrar gelen Feza G\u00fcrsey\u2019le beraber doktora yeterlik s\u0131nav\u0131m\u0131 verdiler. Beni Yale \u00dcniversitesi\u2019ndekileri aratmayan zorlukta yaz\u0131l\u0131 ve s\u00f6zl\u00fc iki g\u00fcnl\u00fck bir s\u0131navdan ge\u00e7irdiler. Bu s\u0131rada Feza G\u00fcrsey\u2019den Relativite Teorisi ile Grup Temsilleri derslerini de ald\u0131\u011f\u0131m i\u00e7in, yurtd\u0131\u015f\u0131nda her yerde kolayca ula\u015famayaca\u011f\u0131m kalitede bir fizik e\u011fitimini ODT\u00dc\u2019de tamamlayabilmi\u015f oldum. Tezimi yazmak i\u00e7in 1974-1975 ders y\u0131l\u0131nda ODT\u00dc\u2019n\u00fcn Ford Vakf\u0131 ile anla\u015fmas\u0131n\u0131n bitim y\u0131l\u0131nda bana verilen son bir bursla, Yale \u00dcniversitesi\u2019ne gittim. Erdal \u0130n\u00f6n\u00fc 1974 sonbahar\u0131nda T\u00dcB\u0130TAK Bilim \u00d6d\u00fcl\u00fc\u2019n\u00fc ald\u0131ktan sonra, 1975 bahar d\u00f6neminde tekrar Princeton \u00dcniversitesi\u2019ni ziyaret etmekteydi. Yale \u00dcniversitesi\u2019ne de u\u011frayarak Boltzmann denkleminin \u00f6l\u00e7eklenmesi \u00fczerine yapt\u0131\u011f\u0131 son \u00e7al\u0131\u015fmas\u0131n\u0131 bir b\u00f6l\u00fcm seminerinde anlatt\u0131. T\u00fcrkiye\u2019ye d\u00f6nd\u00fckten sonra ODT\u00dc\u2019den ayr\u0131larak Bo\u011fazi\u00e7i \u00dcniversitesi\u2019ne ge\u00e7mi\u015fti. Ben d\u00f6nd\u00fc\u011f\u00fcmde, art\u0131k ODT\u00dc\u2019de de\u011fildi. Buna ra\u011fmen \u0130stanbul\u2019dan gelip doktora tez savunmamda bulundu. Doktora sonras\u0131 en az CALTECH kadar \u00fcnl\u00fc ve zor olan Princeton \u00dcniversitesi\u2019nde bir y\u0131l kalarak Nobel \u00d6d\u00fcll\u00fc teorik fizik\u00e7i Eugene Wigner\u2019le beraber \u00e7al\u0131\u015ft\u0131. Bu s\u0131rada \u00e7\u00f6z\u00fcp yay\u0131mlad\u0131klar\u0131 \u00e7ok \u00f6nemli bir teorik fizik problemi nedeniyle ad\u0131 d\u00fcnya \u00e7ap\u0131nda tan\u0131nd\u0131. Y\u0131llar ge\u00e7tik\u00e7e \u00fcn\u00fc daha da yay\u0131ld\u0131. \u201c\u0130n\u00f6n\u00fc-Wigner Grup Kontraksiyonu\u201d y\u00f6ntemi art\u0131k o kadar iyi biliniyor ki, teorik fizik\u00e7ilerin bu y\u00f6ntemi kulland\u0131klar\u0131 zaman orijinal makaleye at\u0131f vermeleri bile gerekmiyor. Nitekim 2004 y\u0131l\u0131nda Erdal \u0130n\u00f6n\u00fc\u2019ye bu \u00e7al\u0131\u015fmas\u0131 nedeniyle, \u201cGrup Teorisi ve Temel Fizik Vakf\u0131\u201d taraf\u0131ndan iki y\u0131lda bir fizi\u011fin anla\u015f\u0131lmas\u0131na grup teorisi yoluyla yap\u0131lan \u00f6nemli katk\u0131lar\u0131 \u00f6d\u00fcllendirmek i\u00e7in verilen prestijli Wigner Madalyas\u0131, o y\u0131l Meksika\u2019da toplanan Uluslararas\u0131 Grup Teorisi Konferans\u0131 s\u0131ras\u0131nda d\u00fczenlenen bir t\u00f6renle verildi. Wigner Madalyas\u0131\u2019n\u0131 1986\u2019da Feza G\u00fcrsey de alm\u0131\u015ft\u0131.<\/p>\n<p>Grup kontraksiyonu nedir? \u00d6nemi nereden gelmektedir? Erdal Bey bu probleme nas\u0131l geldi? Yaz\u0131m\u0131n amac\u0131 bu sorulara biraz a\u00e7\u0131kl\u0131k getirmek olacak.<\/p>\n<p>Y\u00fczy\u0131llar\u0131n birikimiyle bulanarak bug\u00fcne gelen temel fizik yasalar\u0131n\u0131 k\u0131saca birer diferansiyel denklem tak\u0131m\u0131yla ifade etmekteyiz. Newton hareket denklemleri; elektromanyetik alanlar\u0131n sa\u011flad\u0131\u011f\u0131 Maxwell denklemleri veya g\u00f6reli gravitasyon alanlar\u0131n\u0131n sa\u011flad\u0131\u011f\u0131 Einstein alan denklemleri gibi. Fiziksel bir sistemin zamanla evrimini belirleyen bu dinamik denklemler, genelde bir minimum eylem ilkesiyle verilebilir. Bu yakla\u015f\u0131mla yeni bir model \u00f6nermek, verilen temel de\u011fi\u015fkenler cinsinden bir eylem yazmaya indirgenmi\u015f olmaktad\u0131r. Eylem yazmak i\u00e7in hangi fiziksel olgular\u0131 rehber edinece\u011fiz? Bu konuda bizlere yol g\u00f6steren \u00e7ok \u00f6nemli bir sonu\u00e7 1918\u2019de Alman kad\u0131n matematik\u00e7i Emmy Noether\u2019in ispatlad\u0131\u011f\u0131 bir teoremdir. Noether Teoremi\u2019ne g\u00f6re, eylemin her simetrisi (yani temel de\u011fi\u015fkenlerin eylemi ayn\u0131 b\u0131rakan her bir d\u00f6n\u00fc\u015f\u00fcm\u00fc) bir korunum yasas\u0131 gerektirir. Enerji korunumu, eylemin zaman \u00f6telemeleri alt\u0131nda de\u011fi\u015fmemesinin sonucudur. Momentum korunumu, eylemin uzayda \u00f6telemeler alt\u0131nda de\u011fi\u015fmemesinin sonucudur. A\u00e7\u0131sal momentum korunumu, eylemin uzayda d\u00f6nmeler alt\u0131nda de\u011fi\u015fmemesinin sonucudur. Bunlara uzay ve zaman\u0131n izometrileri diyoruz. G\u00f6reli 4-boyutlu uzay-zaman\u0131n simetri d\u00f6n\u00fc\u015f\u00fcmleri, Poincar\u00e9 grubu diye adland\u0131rd\u0131\u011f\u0131m\u0131z 10 parametreli bir Lie grubu olu\u015ftururlar. 1 parametre zaman \u00f6telemelerine, 3 parametre uzayda \u00f6telemelere, 3 parametre uzayda d\u00f6nmelere ve kalan 3 parametre \u00f6zel Lorentz d\u00f6n\u00fc\u015f\u00fcmlerine kar\u015f\u0131 gelmektedir. Asl\u0131nda Noether Teoremi\u2019nin \u00f6nemli bir felsefi boyutu var. Bu teoremle yerel olarak s\u0131nad\u0131\u011f\u0131m\u0131z enerji, momentum ve a\u00e7\u0131sal momentum korunum yasalar\u0131, evrenin yani zaman i\u00e7inde evrilen 3-boyutlu uzay\u0131m\u0131z\u0131n, sonsuzluklarda d\u00fcz olmas\u0131na ba\u011flanmaktad\u0131r. Laboratuvarda oyuncak arabalar\u0131 \u00e7arp\u0131\u015ft\u0131rarak momentum korunumunu test etti\u011finizde, uzay\u0131n sonsuzluklar\u0131n\u0131n \u00f6telemeler alt\u0131nda tekd\u00fcze oldu\u011funu test etmektesiniz. Yerel korunum yasalar\u0131n\u0131n uzay ve zaman\u0131n evrensel yap\u0131yla ili\u015fkilendirilmesi minimum eylem ilkesinin \u00e7ok \u00f6nemli bir sonucudur. Benzer olarak elektrik y\u00fck\u00fc korunumunu da Noether Teoremi yard\u0131m\u0131yla, elektrik ve manyetik potansiyellerin ayar d\u00f6n\u00fc\u015f\u00fcmleri alt\u0131nda elektromanyetik Maxwell eyleminin de\u011fi\u015fmemesine ba\u011flayabiliriz.<\/p>\n<p>Minimum eylem ilkesi ve Noether Teoremi 20. y\u00fczy\u0131l\u0131n ortalar\u0131na do\u011fru, g\u00f6relilik teorilerinin ve kuantum mekani\u011finin ke\u015ffinden sonra geni\u015f kabul g\u00f6rd\u00fc ve kullan\u0131lmaya ba\u015fland\u0131. 1940\u2019lardan itibaren \u00e7ekirdek ve \u00e7ekirdek-alt\u0131 par\u00e7ac\u0131klar\u0131n bir biri ard\u0131na ke\u015ffedilmeye ba\u015flanmas\u0131yla da, yakla\u015f\u0131m bir anlamda tersine d\u00f6nd\u00fc. Yeni bulunan temel par\u00e7ac\u0131klar\u0131n etkile\u015fmelerini i\u00e7eren fiziksel olgularda korunan nicelikler arand\u0131. B\u00f6ylece izospin, baryon say\u0131s\u0131, lepton say\u0131s\u0131, hipery\u00fck, acayiplik y\u00fck\u00fc vb yeni korunum yasalar\u0131 g\u00f6zlemlendi. Bu noktada \u201cAcaba Noether y\u00fck\u00fc olarak bunlar bir eylemin de\u011fi\u015fmezliklerine ba\u011flanabilir mi?\u201d sorusu soruldu. Bu sorunun yan\u0131t\u0131 i\u00e7in Lie simetri gruplar\u0131 ve bunlar\u0131n temsilleri fizik\u00e7iler taraf\u0131ndan sistemli bi\u00e7imde incelenmeye ba\u015fland\u0131.<\/p>\n<p>G\u00f6reli uzay-zaman\u0131n izometrilerinin olu\u015fturdu\u011fu 10 parametreli Poincar\u00e9 simetri grubunun \u00fcniter indirgenemez temsillerini in\u015fa eden Eugene Wigner, bu \u00f6nemli makalesini 1939\u2019da yay\u0131mlam\u0131\u015ft\u0131.
