Buna ek olarak, bir ki\u015finin \u00fczerine \u00f6zel ve s\u00fcrekli olarak kafa yormad\u0131\u011f\u0131 bir ba\u015fl\u0131ktaki d\u00fc\u015f\u00fcncelerini yay\u0131mlamamas\u0131 gerekti\u011fi bilinci onda fazlas\u0131yla yerle\u015fikti. Bug\u00fcne kadar size g\u00f6nderdi\u011fim notlardan bir al\u0131nt\u0131 yay\u0131mlamak istemediniz, e\u011fer b\u00f6yle bir iste\u011finiz olsayd\u0131, notumun bir kopyas\u0131n\u0131 saklard\u0131m. Al\u0131\u015fkanl\u0131k olarak, \u00fcst\u00fcnk\u00f6r\u00fc yazd\u0131\u011f\u0131m ve bas\u0131lm\u0131\u015f kimi notlar\u0131m\u0131 \u2018kendime\u2019 sakl\u0131yorum. Bunlar\u0131n say\u0131s\u0131 \u00e7ok fazla de\u011fil, ancak yay\u0131mlanamayacak kadar k\u00f6t\u00fc de de\u011filler. Zaten tersi olsayd\u0131 da itiraz edilmezdi. Dini konulardaki fikirlerimi toplumla payla\u015fmak konusunda bir \u00f6l\u00e7\u00fcde isteksizim ve bu konu \u00fczerinde bir toplulu\u011fu ikna etmeye yetecek kadar d\u00fc\u015f\u00fcnd\u00fc\u011f\u00fcm\u00fc de sanm\u0131yorum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>S\u0131rada Dr. Abbott\u2019a yaz\u0131lm\u0131\u015f bir ba\u015fka mektup var (16 Kas\u0131m 1871), babam bu mektupta kendini dini ve ahlaki konularda yazmaya yetkin g\u00f6rmeme nedenlerini daha ayr\u0131nt\u0131l\u0131 anlat\u0131yor: \u00ad\u00ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDizin\u2019inize katk\u0131da bulunanlardan biri olmam y\u00f6n\u00fcndeki iste\u011finizden onur duydu\u011fumu ve tasla\u011f\u0131n\u0131z i\u00e7in de fazlas\u0131yla minnettar oldu\u011fumu belirtmek isterim. Herkesin ger\u00e7ek oldu\u011funa inand\u0131\u011f\u0131 \u015feyi yaymas\u0131n\u0131n g\u00f6rev oldu\u011fu \u00f6nermesine de tamamen kat\u0131l\u0131yorum. Sizin bunu b\u00fcy\u00fck bir kendini adam\u0131\u015fl\u0131k ve gayret i\u00e7inde yap\u0131yor olman\u0131za da sayg\u0131m sonsuz. Fakat \u015funu s\u00f6yleyebilirim, bilin\u00e7li ki\u015filer olarak, bu b\u00fcy\u00fck ve harikulade evrenin, \u015fans eseri ortaya \u00e7\u0131kt\u0131\u011f\u0131n\u0131 varsaymam\u0131z\u0131n imk\u00e2ns\u0131z olaca\u011f\u0131 iddias\u0131, bana Tanr\u0131\u2019n\u0131n varl\u0131\u011f\u0131 ile ilgili temel iddiaym\u0131\u015f gibi geliyor; bu ger\u00e7ekten de\u011ferli bir iddia olsa da, do\u011frulu\u011fu konusunda hen\u00fcz bir karar verebilmi\u015f de\u011filim. Bir ilk nedenin varl\u0131\u011f\u0131n\u0131 kabul edecek olursak, akl\u0131m\u0131z\u0131n bu sefer de bunun nereden geldi\u011fi ve nas\u0131l ortaya \u00e7\u0131kt\u0131\u011f\u0131 sorular\u0131yla k\u0131vranaca\u011f\u0131n\u0131n fark\u0131nday\u0131m. Ayr\u0131ca d\u00fcnyan\u0131n \u00e7ekti\u011fi b\u00fcy\u00fck ac\u0131lar\u0131n yaratt\u0131\u011f\u0131 g\u00fc\u00e7l\u00fc\u011f\u00fc de g\u00f6z ard\u0131 edemem. Tanr\u0131\u2019ya tam manas\u0131yla inanan bir s\u00fcr\u00fc muktedir ki\u015finin fikrine uymaya te\u015fvik edilsem de, bu iddian\u0131n ne kadar zay\u0131f oldu\u011funu da g\u00f6rmekteyim. Bu konuda var\u0131labilecek en g\u00fcvenli sonu\u00e7, meselenin b\u00fct\u00fcn\u00fcn\u00fcn insan akl\u0131n\u0131n kapsam\u0131n\u0131n \u00f6tesinde oldu\u011fudur, fakat ki\u015fi yine de g\u00f6revini yapabilir.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yine 1879\u2019da, bir Alman \u00f6\u011frenci benzer bi\u00e7imde kendisine dan\u0131\u015f\u0131yordu. Mektup, babam\u0131n ailesinin bir \u00fcyesi taraf\u0131ndan yan\u0131tland\u0131:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Darwin, \u00e7ok say\u0131da mektup ald\u0131\u011f\u0131 i\u00e7in hepsini yan\u0131tlayamad\u0131\u011f\u0131n\u0131 belirtmemi istedi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cO, Evrim teorisi ile Tanr\u0131\u2019ya duyulan inanc\u0131n birbiriyle uyumlu oldu\u011funu \u00f6ne s\u00fcr\u00fcyor, ancak farkl\u0131 ki\u015filerin Tanr\u0131\u2019dan ne anlad\u0131klar\u0131 konusunda farkl\u0131 tan\u0131mlamalar yapt\u0131\u011f\u0131n\u0131 da unutmaman\u0131z gerekir.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fakat yan\u0131t, bu Alman gencini tatmin etmedi ve bu kez ondan \u015fu yan\u0131t\u0131 ald\u0131:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBen \u00e7ok me\u015fgul ve sa\u011fl\u0131\u011f\u0131n\u0131 yitirmi\u015f ya\u015fl\u0131 bir adam\u0131m, t\u00fcm zaman\u0131m\u0131 sorulara yan\u0131t vererek ge\u00e7iremem, &#8211; hepsi ger\u00e7ekten cevaplanamazlar da. Bilimin \u0130sa ile bir i\u015fi olamaz, ancak bilimsel ara\u015ft\u0131rma yapma al\u0131\u015fkanl\u0131\u011f\u0131 insan\u0131 kan\u0131tlar\u0131 do\u011fru kabul ederken pek tedbirli davranmaya zorluyor. Tanr\u0131 \u015fimdi Hindulara bir vahiy indirecek olsa H\u0131r\u0131stiyanl\u0131k i\u00e7in <em>Eski Ahit<\/em>\u2019le ba\u011flant\u0131l\u0131 olarak d\u00fc\u015f\u00fcnd\u00fc\u011f\u00fcm\u00fcz gibi bunun da Vi\u015fnu, Siva ya da benzeri bir inan\u0131\u015fla ba\u011flant\u0131l\u0131 olmas\u0131na m\u00fcsaede etmesi ne kadar inand\u0131r\u0131c\u0131d\u0131r?
